Poison Prevention in Action
Community Outreach
Adults/Families
Audience:
Adults and Community Educators including nurses, health departments and cooperative extension agents
Challenge:
To inform adult audiences that poison control is not just for children: in fact, adults over the age of 19 sustain 80% of the life-threatening effects - and 89% of the fatalities - from exposure to household poisons
The JMH Solution:
JMH worked with poison control experts across the country to develop a bilingual poison prevention education program for use in both English speaking and Spanish speaking communities. The program offers strategies for reducing poison exposures in adults, especially senior citizens, and promotes the consolidated national toll-free poison control number: 1-800-222-1222. Program components include a docu-drama style video showing a variety of poison-exposure case studies and actionable advice from Poison Control Center experts. An online PowerPoint® program offers community educators a ready-to-go presentation. The accompanying Educator's Guide includes a presentation outline and easy-to-read, easy-to-use, take-home brochure to reinforce learnings from the presentation. For the Spanish video, content was based upon the English version, and then filmed using Spanish actors and Spanish-speaking Poison Control Specialists. Print materials were developed in English and translated into Spanish.
