Preventing Listeriosis
Community Outreach
Pregnant Hispanic Women
Audience:
Pregnant Hispanic women in the U.S. and Promotoras/Outreach Workers in Hispanic communities
Challenge:
To inform Hispanic women that consuming traditional, Mexican-style cheese, like Queso Fresco, can put their unborn babies at risk for a stillbirth. These cheeses are a cultural favorite, and typically are made from unpasteurized milk which can contain the deadly Listeria bacterium.
The JMH Solution:
JMH developed the Hispanic-focused outreach program for use in the border communities of San Diego, CA; El Paso and Houston, TX; as well as in Winston-Salem, NC where outbreaks of listeriosis have occurred. Community research led to the development of a self contained Education Toolkit that includes background information and reproducible materials: a community flyer, a brochure, and a booklet created in the popular Fotonovela style. The kit also includes a community outreach poster. All materials are provided in English and Spanish, and are supplied in print format and on a CD that includes media outreach materials.
