Celebrate America!
Multicultural Nutrition Program
4th and 5th Grades
Audience:
Students grades 4 and 5 and their families
Challenge:
To incorporate health-related messages about beef and its nutritional benefits to growing children in a program that fits into the curriculum
The JMH Solution:
JMH created a social-studies based program that celebrates cultural diversity and likes/differences through looking at traditional foods and customs. The comprehensive Teacher's Guide contains a curriculum that provides students the opportunity to explore favorite recipes and traditions of their own individual cultural backgrounds. The program kicks off with a live action video, "Lost in the Statue of Liberty," that was filmed on location and features five students who get lost while on a class trip. Students in the video spend their "lost" time recounting tales of their diverse backgrounds and favorite cultural foods; these anecdotes and stories then serve as a springboard for in-class explorations, recipe tasting, a Class Culture Day event, and more. For family involvement, students gather information about how and when their families came to America - using cultural interviews. Reproducible recipes, graphic cultural worksheets, and a full-color Food Guide Pyramid poster are also included.
