Fight BAC! For Food Safety

Food Safety Program
Kindergarten - 6th Grade

Audience:

Students in grades K - 3 and 4 - 6 and their families

Challenge:

To engage children at different age/developmental levels and their families in the critical mission of proper food handling to prevent foodborne illness through integrated classroom programs

The JMH Solution:

JMH developed two programs to teach elementary school children the Four Simple Steps to Food Safety: Clean, Separate, Cook and Chill. Both programs engage students in the food safety topic through creative exploration: a "presentation kit" for implementing with Grades K - 3, and a discovery-based science curriculum for Grades 4 - 6. The K - 3 Presentation Kit is based upon an in-class "skit," presented by a teacher, school nurse or guest using a BAC puppet - the slimy green bacteria "mascot" of the Partnership's Fight BAC!™ campaign. The leader's guide includes basic food safety information and presentation tips, so that the program presenter doesn't need to be a "food safety expert." The 4th- 6th grade science curriculum includes the award-winning "How Our School Fought BAC for Food Safety" video, which follows the story of a middle school newspaper team who solve a mysterious food safety outbreak among fellow students. In-class science experiments and a food safety "cootie catcher" (foldable Q & A manipulative) put food safety literally in the hands of the students and their families.
