The Foods We Eat
Multicultural Nutrition Program
Preschool - Kindergarten
Audience:
Preschool and Kindergarten children and their families
Challenge:
To encourage young children to develop cultural awareness, try new foods, and enjoy a variety of healthy foods from different cultures
The JMH Solution:
JMH created a colorful classroom kit to teach young children about food and nutrition in the context of the multicultural world around them. By working with partners such as the
Head Start Bureau and the
Indian Health Service, JMH ensured the cultural appropriateness of the multi-media components. Focusing on
early literacy, components include
The Foods I Eat, The Foods You Eat big book and two storybooks:
It's a Sandwich! and
All Our Fruits and Vegetables. Laminated Fruit and Vegetable Counting Cards and a selection of original sing-along songs are also aligned with early childhood standards. The multicultural nutrition guide for teachers includes a variety of cultural recipes, how-tos for creating an in-class "Taster's Club," and classroom activities. Another highlight of the guide is the "We Can. . ." idea starters, featuring easy-to-implement actions - for teachers to do in class with children, for children to explore themselves, and for families to do together at home.
