Early Childhood Hand Washing Initiative
Preschool - 1st Grade

Audience:

Preschool through 1st Grade children and their families

Challenge:

To promote handwashing as an effective behavior in the prevention of infectious disease by engaging children to make hand washing a permanent part of their every day lives in school and at home

The JMH Solution:

JMH created a ready-made toolkit that makes it easy for school nurses to visit classrooms and get children excited about hand washing. Using Handy the Hand Washing Octopus^® as program mascot, components include the Handy and his Helpers Video, two-sided wall poster, stickers, and Softsoap^® Foam Works™ for the nurse's office sink.
The comprehensive Nurse's Guide offers presentation tips to simplify classroom visits and energize youngsters. The Guide also includes scientific background on hand washing efficacy to empower nurses with information that helps them gain administrative and parental support for a hand washing initiative. For closure, children "bring hand washing home" via an informational flyer and a Family Hand Washing Pledge.
