Beetle Busters
Environmental Program
Middle School - High School
Audience:
Middle and high school students and their families
Challenge:
To empower youth to search for the Asian Longhorned Beetle in their communities and report their findings to USDA
The JMH Solution:
Tapping into "the power of youth," JMH empowered Chicago-area students to join local efforts to eradicate the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB). JMH created a Beetle Busters program for middle and high school science classrooms, and one for after school/summer youth programs. The school program is standards-based, fitting into the existing curriculum via science and language arts. The summer program contains fun, easy-to-do activities. Students use the custom Web site for research and to report their findings. For community service, students created their own local outreach campaigns.
