Science and Our Food Supply
Food Safety Program
Middle School - High School
Audience:
Middle and high school science students
Challenge:
To raise awareness of the importance of food safety. Each year, approximately one third of the U.S. population has mild to severe illnesses caused by pathogens in food - and more than 5,000 people die from them.
The JMH Solution:
Working closely with the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), and guided by the National Science Education Standards, JMH created an easy-to-use supplemental curriculum kit that shares science concepts with middle and high school students via a subject that captures their interest - food. Two teacher's guides, for middle and high school, use cutting-edge science to examine food safety "from the farm to the table." A video, Dr. X and the Quest for Food Safety, explores food science, new food technologies, careers in science and practical health tips through the eyes of a "student investigator" and a crusading food safety scientist, Dr. X. Rounding out the program, the Food Safety A to Z Reference Guide provides teachers and students with current, comprehensive food science information. In addition to important information on handling, cooking and serving food, the guide includes scientist interviews, fun facts and answers to frequently asked questions.
