Lessons from Literature
Violence Prevention Program
High School
Audience:
High school English literature teachers and their students
Challenge:
To engage and empower teachers to help students meet core learning standards, learn to recognize the impact of their choices, and identify alternatives to violence. Ultimately, teachers who work with Lessons from Literature are vehicles in enabling adolescents to build healthy, non-violent relationships.
The JMH Solution:
To create program awareness, JMH held a competitive search and identified six master English teachers to serve as program advisors. In addition, JMH partnered with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and American School Counselor Association (ASCA) to achieve greater credibility with teachers. Currently in the final stages of Phase II development, the program will consist of:
- Web site, www.lessonsfromliterature.org, with various resources and background information about violence
- Classroom manual with lessons designed around Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Lord of the Flies
- Online resource library to help teachers build an impactful lesson or unit of study around relationship abuse and bullying
